Our Favourite Towns and Villages in Suffolk
Like the rest of East Anglia, Suffolk is known for its rural charm and relative remoteness when compared with the rest of the country. Lacking in cities, Suffolk is a county defined by its towns and villages and we have cottages in more than 120 of them! Whilst it would be one mean feat to travel to all 120 of our Suffolk holiday locations, our local team have brought together this list of Suffolk’s most picture-perfect towns and villages that you should definitely make time to visit.
Lavenham
As mentioned in our history guide, Lavenham was once a very wealthy town with a rich cloth industry. As a result, Lavenham has more listed buildings than anywhere else in the UK and literally feels like stepping back in time as you wander down its winding streets, lined with timber framed Tudor buildings. Quaint, quiet, but undeniably gorgeous, Lavenham isn’t for those who love the big city life, but is absolutely perfect for those who love afternoon tea, local pubs and taking in historical sites. Luckily for you, we also have a range of holiday cottages in Lavenham if this Tudor town sounds like your cup of tea.
East Bergholt
Birthplace of Suffolk artist John Constable, East Bergholt is a parish village submerged in the countryside and right on the border of the Dedham Valley. With the River Stour running through it, visitors may want to take a stroll along the riverbank and across Flatford Bridge to take in the views of thatched roofs, tree lined streets and the meandering river itself. With an array of small local pubs to pop into, East Bergholt is a lovely place to get away from the hustle and bustle for the day, or perhaps a longer break if you like the look of our holiday cottages in the area.
Rumburgh
Located between Halesworth and Bunghay, Rumburgh is a small village with Suffolk charm in abundance. Home to the Rumburgh Buck, a sixteenth century pub, which also serves up some delicious dishes, Rumburgh is old-worldly, quaint and pretty as a picture. A trip to Rumburgh is a great day for those enthusiastic about local and unusual history, as the village’s church is a Grade I listed building that dates back to the thirteenth century. Small though Rumburgh is, it’s a fascinating place and we also have a cottage in the village, should you wish to stay here.
Saxmundham
This market town is just five miles from the Suffolk coast and a short drive to lovely Aldebugh. We have 6 cottages in Saxmundham for you to take a look at and, aside from its brilliant location, the town has plenty going on for you to enjoy a holiday here. From its historic parish church and heritage extending as far back as 1066, Saxmundham is another example of the way in which history and local culture has been so well preserved in Suffolk. For a spot of culture, head to the George Farnham Art Gallery and the Saxmundham Museum, followed by a bite to eat at locals’ favourite, Trawler’s Catch. The town also has a train station, so is a great place for those not bringing a car on holiday but still wanting to travel across the region
