Bolney Wine Estate
If you fancy yourself as a bit of a wine connoisseur, head to the Bolney Wine Estate, one of England’s oldest vineyards. Located half an hour north of Brighton and on the edge of the High Weald, Bolney Estate is in the prime of the English countryside. Book onto their famous Cheese and Wine tasting tour or dine in their Eighteen Acre cafe. Perfect for an anniversary, a friend’s trip away or a pre-wedding celebration, Bolney Wine Estate is one of Sussex’s best attractions for sure.
Lewes Castle and Museum
There’s no better way to view the Sussex landscape than from the top of Lewes Castle. The impressive Norman structure has two mounds and can be climbed up to a panoramic viewing platform that is a sight to behold. The castle is also attached to the Museum of Sussex Archaeology, home to local artefacts from prehistoric times to the medieval period, as well as some interesting information about the history of Lewes for you to discover.
Shopping in Chichester
Ready to shop until you drop? Head into Chichester, where you’ll find historic streets lined with a range of independent shops and boutiques, as well as high street favourites. Little London Food Market, held every Saturday, is a highlight and is well worth a visit if you happen to be there at the right time, as it is home to a range of local sellers offering up various artisanal tasty treats. A thriving city, there are also plenty of restaurants and cafes to try for when you’re in need of some refreshment.
Royal Pavilion, Brighton
Undoubtedly one of the most majestic and impressive buildings in Sussex, the Brighton Pavillion was once the pleasure palace of King George IV and epitomises the luxury of the Regency era. Since that time, the Royal Pavilion has served many functions, including becoming a temporary hospital during World War One. During your visit to the pavilion, you will learn about all this and more, as well as having the pleasure of exploring the gorgeous grounds which surround the iconic building.
Bluebell Railway Steam Train
This authentic steam train runs for 11 miles through the Sussex countryside, from East Grinstead Station to Sheffield Park, along the edge of Ashdown Forest. A great option for a family-friendly day out, there is also a museum at Sheffield Park station with plenty to keep little ones entertained. If you’re venturing to Sussex during the festive season, be sure to check out the Santa steam railway for an extra-special yuletide treat.
Ashurst and The Fountain Inn
Ashurst is a quiet little parish village that is a favourite of our local team for a peaceful day out and a walk around the local sites. Recognisable to some as the filming location for Paul McCartney’s Christmas song ‘Wonderful Christmas Time’, The Fountain Inn pub is a local landmark that is well worth a visit. Aside from being a star of the silver screen, the pub serves up delicious food including a very tempting Sunday Lunch Menu. Definitely one for couples seeking some downtime, or anyone wanting to chill out in a rural setting, add Ashurst to your holiday itinerary for a calming day trip.
