But what happens when you leave your cottage? Rest assured, Suffolk is a very dog friendly place, but we’ve created this guide to some of the region's most canine caring beaches and walks so that your holiday can be as pawfect as possible.
Walks
Nowton Park, Bury St Edmunds
If you’re visiting Bury or the nearby area with your pooch, make sure to save some time to visit Nowton Park. With over 200 acres of landscaped gardens, Nowton Park is a bubble of total natural bliss. Ponds, sculptures, flower patches, an arboretum and an impressive maze all await to be discovered here and your dog is welcome to explore it all with you too.
Trimley Estate, near Felixstowe
The Trimley Estate is home to a 4-mile circular route which combines scenery of man and nature, with views across the River Orwell onto Felixstowe Port, as well as rolling green fields and shady lanes dotted with wildflowers. Dogs love this walk and, depending on how far your pet likes to travel, the route can be extended a further three miles by following signs to Trimley Marshes.
Alton Water, Stutton
This reservoir and park south of Ipswich is a great walking option for those with smaller or older pets, as there are plenty of places, including benches, to take a break and lots of freedom to simply take your dog as far as you like. With stunning views and a cafe that looks out onto the reservoir, Alton Water is a great dog-friendly day out to see the best of Suffolk.
Beaches
Dunwich Heath
As mentioned in our Suffolk coastal guide, Dunwich Heath is one of Suffolk’s most magical nature reserves. Dog-friendly all year round and the perfect go-between for paws familiar with coast and country, there are plenty of waymarked routes across the heath to explore. For a spot of light refreshment mid or post-stroll, be sure to visit the lovely tearoom on site.
Corton Sands
To the north of Lowestoft lies Corton Sands, a quiet beach with no dog bans or limitations and plenty of dog bins spread across the sands. Exposed to the elements, this beach can get a little breezy, but is ideal for those who enjoy a brisk walk in the sea air.
Thorpeness
Thorpeness near Aldeburgh is a colourful little village with a vast, beautiful and very clean dog-friendly beach. Popular with anglers also, Thorpeness is a great pick for those who love bringing a canine companion with them on a fishing trip. We also have some great pet-friendly cottages in Thorpeness that are just a stone’s-throw away from the gorgeous sea front.
