Spending your holiday money on a few local souvenirs and trinkets is all part and parcel of a good holiday. After all, you need something to remember the place you stayed by, right? At least that’s what we think. When you’re not chilling in one of our Devon Holiday Homes, you’ll be out and about, exploring and discovering and our local team have curated this guide to tell you where you can shop ‘til you drop as well.
Totnes
Dartington’s big sibling, Totnes has long had a reputation for having an artsy high street, full of eco-friendly homeware stores and independent eateries. Highlights include Salago, which sells a range of handmade fashion, accessories, stationery and toys; the East Gate Bookshop; art shop Famous Rebel and Revival vintage clothing. Definitely a must for those who enjoy the unique and unusual, but Totnes as a whole is such a rich and varied high street that there is something to cater for every taste. So, if you’re holidaying in South Devon, be sure to carve out a day in the diary to visit this fun town.
Ilfracombe
Ilfracombe is a true gem of the North Devon coast and the same can be said about its range of boutique stores and quaint seaside shops. Many of the shopfronts on Ilfracombe high street are delightfully vintage and sell allsorts. From The T-Shirt Shack at Funky Junction to handmade goodies from Ilfracombe Artisan Shop, this town’s shopping is truly a chocolate box. Speaking of chocolate, who can forget Ilfracombe’s legendary Chocolate Emporium? Some say it’s the best in England, but you will have to visit for yourself to find out.
Tiverton
Tucked away in the mid-Devon countryside is the town of Tiverton and its wonderful array of shops. Tiverton is home to a historic pannier market, which is on the site of a Roman encampment, which is open Monday-Saturday every week, with Monday being a designated day for second-hand goods. From books and butchers to clothes and crystals, the Tiverton pannier market really has it all. There are plenty of big high street names and small boutiques across the town too, so you can really make the most of your shopping trip to Tiverton.
Dartington
Just north of Totnes lies the village of Dartington, famous for its crystal, which makes for a perfect souvenir if you’re staying in one of our cottages near this creative hub. One of our team, Koren, explains how you can really make a day of visiting the Dartington shops: “Take a stroll down to the shops at Dartington and have a meal at Bayards Kitchen or browse the local merchandise from soap to Dartington Crystal. I love to visit Dartington for the day and take a picnic to eat in the garden, stop for a drink at the White Heart, walk along the river and spend my hard-earned money in the fantastic shops. Even my son loves the walk and of course, the kids toy shop”.
