Visiting Marazion
Situated in Cornwall’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Marazion is well regarded as one of the region’s prettiest towns, but it is also one of the oldest. Established in 1257 after being affirmed by King Henry III, Marazion has some truly wonderous historic buildings and a distinctly old world feel that is an integral part of its charm. The town’s most famous monument is undoubtedly St Micheal’s Mount, an island just off the shore of Mount Bay with an exquisite medieval castle. The island is part owned by the National Trust, but is still under occupancy by the St Aubyn family, who have lived on the island since the English Civil War. The castle and gardens are open for most parts of the year, but booking tickets for entry is essential. You can access the island via boat, or challenge yourself to walk across during low tide.
Aside from the mount, Marazion has a range of local gems that are less famous, but just as entertaining and interesting. We particularly recommend checking out The Hoxton Special, a cafe and activity centre on the beach offering kitesurfing, paddleboarding and kayaking, as well as evening yoga classes. There are also various pubs serving the best food and drink across the town. The Fire Engine Inn beautiful dog-friendly pub with a beer garden overlooking the bay and St Micheal’s Bay, making it the perfect place for a refreshing evening drink in the sun. There are also plenty of locally-run shops, including a few cute gift shops.
Naturally, Marazion and its West Cornwall neighbours, Lizard and Mousehole, shine in the spring and summer months, but this is a town that is also well-known for its Christmas and winter time celebrations. In December, the street’s get lined with beautiful lights and locals decorate their windows with Christmas scenes and on Christmas Eve, Santa makes a special appearance in the town square. Totally magical, a festive trip to Marazion is a wonderful option for families looking for a winter break.
