If you fancy trying out the challenge, be sure to engage with the tradition where cyclists dip their wheels in the water at the beginning and the end of the route. When you visit this part of the Northumberland Countryside, it’s amazing to think of the Roman world that once existed here, but if you look closely enough, the remains of the ancient era are all around you. But the history of this area isn’t exclusively Roman. In fact, a trip to the Old Gaol in Hexham is well worth a visit if you’re interested in medieval history. As one of England’s oldest prisons, this formidable stone building is now a family-friendly museum packed with interactive exhibitions about the prison’s fascinating (and gruesome) history. Away from the slightly spooky prison, however, Hexham is a bustling countryside town and was voted England’s favourite market town by County Life magazine.
