Cottages in Grasmere

Grasmere, as one of the most central and popular villages in the Lake District, has been attracting visitors from far and wide for years. Once the home of poet William Wordsworth, Grasmere’s surroundings have a reputation for inspiring writers and artists and when you’re here, it’s easy to see why. The rolling hills, brooding sky and adorable farm animals of this area make it a truly lovely place to be and our holiday cottages here really showcase that.

Many of our holiday cottages in Grasmere sleep just two guests and, considering its influence on one of the greatest Romantic poets in history, perhaps one of these intimate rural boltholes will be perfect for your next romantic break. We also have a number of luxury holiday homes in and near Grasmere, featuring enclosed gardens, open fires, beautiful interiors and even electric vehicle charging points in some cases. Many of our luxury homes are perfect for large groups and families, as they sleep upwards of 8 guests – if you are travelling with a big group, check out our large Lake District cottages.

The majority of our cottages in and around Grasmere are also dog-friendly and we can’t think of a better pick for a holiday with your four-legged friend. Grasmere area has lots of woodland so feels very private and is perfect for rambling. There is also plentiful wildlife around, including many bird species and red squirrels spotted at Allan Bank and White Moss woods. Other creatures like Otters are often spotted on the River Rothay banks.

Rydal Water is another very dog-friendly spot near Grasmere. Rydal Water is a shallow lake ideal for wild swimmers that is lovely and peaceful because it is generally not as busy as other spots. There is a circular walk around it known as Wordsworth Walk, which is very popular with dog walkers. Part of the route is known as the Coffin Road because it used to be the route used for bringing the dead from Rydal to Grasmere for burial. The circular route starts at White Moss waterfall, onto Rydal village, past the Glen Rothay Hotel then Rydal Water and Rydal cave then back to White Moss.

The village of Grasmere is also packed with curiosities and amenities. In fact, the village is one of the Lake District’s most popular spots with many gift shops, including the very popular Herdy range and plenty of places to eat. August sees the historic rushbearing festival where the earth floor of the church used to be strewn with fragrant new rushes for warmth and hygiene. These days the floor is flagged, but children still process rushes through the village once a year. Grasmere sports day is also worth visiting in late August to see traditional sports such as Westmorland wrestling and fell running.

Close also to Ambleside, Elterwater and other favoured Lake District spots, Grasmere makes for a delightful holiday with spectacular scenery on your doorstep.
