Cottages in South West England
This captivating corner of England is a destination for all the family. From the land of Thomas Hardy in Dorset, to the gentle rolling hills of Devon and down to the sandy coves and fishing villages of Cornwall; this is a corner of Britain which has delighted holidaymakers for over a hundred years, and it isn’t showing any signs of flagging.
What's all the fuss about?
In a nutshell we think it’s the weather! Sunny and warm, it’s southern shores are referred to as the English Riviera and we can quite see why. The sea laps against the hulls of bobbing boats, palm trees (of a sort) are a common sight and the sun beats down upon mile beyond mile of sandy coastline. Head inland and you’re met by picture postcard villages, winding roads and green pasturelands, before reaching the rugged and wild northern reaches of weather beaten shores. Whatever you're looking for, be it a family friendly stay with beaches the kids will love, a surf trip to remember, a walking holiday with stunning vistas or just a quiet stay amongst pretty streets with harbour views. The South West has it all, and all easily accessible from some of the UK’s busiest towns and cities such as Bristol, Birmingham and London.
What can I expect from the South West?
The South West is made up of three key counties, Devon, Dorset and Cornwall. Here’s a little bit about each of these top UK destinations to help you decide which is the right choice for you.
Dorset
Criss crossed with footpaths and home to England’s natural UNESCO world heritage site, Dorset allows you to take on a less hurried pace of life and enjoy the shingle banks and Victorian seaside town of Swanage. It’s THE seaside town for eating icecream on the promenade and watching the people go by. Or, you can search for your own slice of prehistoric England along the Jurassic coast, and swim under the mighty Old Harry Rocks and Durdle Door.
Devon
Something for everyone. From the famous surf spots of Woolacombe and Croyde, to ‘Little Switzerland’ in Lynmouth and Lynton. Enjoy great eating and Devonshire cream teas in any number of pretty coastal towns and villages such as Braunton, Ilfracombe, Instow and Appledore. Alternatively, you might like to escape the seaside and find a quiet spot deep in the green pastures of the North Devon countryside and the wild expanse of Exmoor National Park. A county perfect for activity both in and out of the water.
Cornwall
A county of fishing villages, surf spots, the Eden Project, magnificent gardens, arts and crafts and fine dining. Cornwall is considered to be the pinnacle of South West holidaying. In the balmy summer months, people flock in their droves to enjoy the celebrated light of St. Ives, the country’s only sub-tropical climate, sandy beaches at Sennen and Perranporth and plenty of fine dining and pasty eating opportunities, namely 15 in Newquay and Rick Stein’s in Padstow... and let’s not forget the great surf for the more active amongst its visitors.
