In the picturesque setting of south-east Cornwall lies Freshwater Vean, a single storey cottage with coal burning stove, king sized bed and stunning views over the Percuil River on the Roseland Peninsula. It is next to a boatyard which makes it simplicity itself to hire a vessel and head out onto the water. Either explore the inland rivers or head out to open waters before heading back to your cottage to enjoy your romantic getaway.

Weez House is a secluded log cabin set on a hill above Croyde on the North Devon coast. It’s an ideal place for romantic getaways, and also ideal for couples who want to hit the surf; the rolling waves of the sea are just a short walk away. You can bring your own gear or hire it from one of the stores nearby, as well as take lessons from one of the many instructors available.

Buncton Manor Cottage in Steyning, Sussex is a gorgeous single storey cottage in a secluded area. This is a place where you can get back to nature and explore the many footpaths in the area, including the South Downs Path. There is wildlife in abundance to be spotted, both on the trails and at the cottage.

Santa Monica in Norfolk's Sea Palling is a unique place for a romantic getaway. Once a fisherman’s cabin, it’s now been completely renovated into a cosy chalet, complete with wood burning stove and claw-foot bath. It’s only a few metres from the sea and a nearby jet-ski hire centre, perfect for getting your adrenaline fix.

There aren’t many places in the UK where you can stay at the foot of a mountain, but the Old Snowdon Ranger Station is one of them. The wood-lined and well insulated listed building was originally built in 1870, and is a great base for exploring Snowdonia. Try cycling, mountain biking, fell running, climbing – it’s all on your doorstep!

Woodside is a cosy holiday cottage near coastal Whitby in Yorkshire. Its position in the North York Moors means that you can enjoy romantic walks across the moors, but also mountain biking, climbing, bouldering and plenty more. The domed ceiling of the cottage makes this a unique place to stay.

The Hide in Hasketon, Suffolk is a newly renovated cottage located down a quiet country lane, perfect for a peaceful getaway. It’s also just outside the lovely market town of Woodbridge where you can try your hand at watersports on the River Deben. Also close by is Beacon Rally Karts, which has three dirt tracks and karts that tear around the track at up to 35mph.

Further west lies Felin Fach near Lampeter in Wales. This cottage was once a watermill and has now been converted into a well appointed holiday home with a king sized double bed and woodburner. Close by are the Dolaucothi gold mines and the 18,000 acre Brechfa Forest, just waiting for you to explore.

Another great place for active couples wanting romantic getaways is Pear Loft Cottage in Ebberston. It’s ideally placed for the North Yorkshire Moors and Dalby Forest, where you have a host of activities at your fingertips: mountain biking, climbing, running, and even a high wire experience at the local Go Ape centre. Back at the cottage you can enjoy all the usual facilities, plus a games room and large swimming pool.
