Mother's Day

Oh mumma! It’s that time of year again and we thought we’d spend some time finding out what Mother’s day is all about.
It wasn’t always flowers and breakfasts in bed, Mother's Day can be traced all the way back to the Romans and the Greeks. The Greeks honoured Rhea, the mother of many gods and goddesses and the Romans honoured Cybele, a mother goddess. Fast forward a couple of hundred years and we have evidence of ‘Mothering Sunday’. After honouring the Virgin Mary at Church service during Lent, children would then give their mothers gifts... However, along came the industrial revolution, the tradition dwindled and the poor old mum's got a tad forgotten about. Fast forward again and thankfully the tradition returned after WWII. With the help of the American soldiers giving it a nudge in the right direction, the UK embraced the all singing, all dancing US tradition of Mother's Day and made it what it is today.
Like all the generations before us, we think it’s a lovely idea to make an effort on Mother’s Day. All over the country little ones will be rolling up their sleeves to rustle up morning pancakes after busily gluing a seemingly bottomless pot of glitter to cards. Teenagers can take some time to say thanks for the endless taxi service, laundrette and agony aunt role many of our dear old Mum’s take and, the older ones amongst us can just say thank you for all the years they have been our rock.
We need to take some time out of the hustle and bustle of day to day life to stop for a second and tip our hats to our long suffering Mothers. If all this talk of family has made you yearn for some quality time with your nearest and dearest, then don’t hold back, treat them to something special. Wine and dine, a long walk in the brisk spring air, a special present, a bunch of daffodils or just a card. Join us in spoiling our mums this Mother’s Day and try to make her feel like a million dollars this year!
