Lake District Movie Magic

With the new Lake District inspired Peter Rabbit movie being a hit at the Box office this Easter we thought we’d look at which movies are filmed in the Lake District which you may not have been aware of. With its distinctive rugged landscape, the Lake District has proved popular with many high-profile filmmakers over the years and offers the perfect backdrop for many a blockbuster, here are my Top 5;

Star Wars the Force awakens (2015)

In this return to the franchise, the Millennium Falcon can be seen flying over Derwent water in one of many Ariel fight scenes which uses the Lake District fells as a background. The character Rey can also be quoted as saying ‘I didn’t know there was so much green in the whole galaxy’ when arriving on Takodana, which I imagine echo’s the feelings of many of our visitors to the Lake District.

Snow White and the Huntsman (2012)

Many of the scenes for this film were filmed in our very own Langdale, with an all-star cast including Charlize Theron and Kirsten Stewart there was also some scenes filmed at cathedral caves which is located near the 3 shires pub and worth a visit if you are in the area.

Miss Potter (2006)

Okay, this one is obvious, staring Renee Zellwegger and documenting the life of arguably the Lake Districts most famous resident. As a keen conservationist, much of the land Beatrix Potter bought now belongs to the national park and a lot of the film was shot in and around the Lake District and Cumbria.

Withnail and I (1987)

This film is a cult classic with so many memorable lines, set in and around the landscape of the village of Shap, starring Richard E Grant and Paul McGann as Withnail and Marwood, two unemployed actors who decide to take a holiday in Withnail’s uncle Monty’s cottage in a bid to escape their uneventful lives.

28 Days later (2002)

The closing scenes of Danny Boyles epic Zombie movie 28 days later is filmed in the Lake Districts Ennerdale, which in real life is a tranquil place to visit to escape the pace of daily life. The film's characters have taken sanctuary from the imminent Zombie threat in an abandoned farmhouse and wait in hope of a rescue.
