Downton Abbey, Heartbeat, Death comes to Pemberley and both editions of Evelyn Waugh’s classic Brideshead Revisited which was filmed at Castle Howard, were all shot at different locations on the North York Moors. Classic stately homes dot the landscape and provide a fascinating and historic backdrop to this atmospheric and beautiful part of Yorkshire.
The North York Moors are easy to access, you can choose to get in amongst it by walking, cycling, even horse riding, or let the train take the strain and enjoy the fabulous eighteen miles of railway line that makes up the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. The north-west coastline also beckons with the dramatic Robin Hood’s Bay and a little to the north, Whitby, with the ruins of the famous Whitby Abbey brooding over the East Cliff headland, reputedly the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’.
