Access Statement

This 120 year old cottage was once a small station on the narrow gauge Welsh Highland Railway. It has been renovated in recent years to provide comfortable, homely accommodation for one or two people. Access via public transport is available year round, with a bus stop less than 50 metres from the property. This service is available each day until early evening. Train service via the WHR is more limited, particularly out of season, station platform 100 metres; access via an uneven path. Arriving by car, there is private off road parking by the cottage. Access to the cottage consists of a slightly inclined gravel path leading to three steps and then a flagged path, in total about 15 metres in distance. The steps have a handrail, on the left hand side going up. At night the path is lit by external lighting. The cottage is single storey and compact, and this limited space means that unfortunately wheelchair access is not possible. Flooring in the cottage is mainly carpet, with cushion flooring fitted in the kitchen area and in the ensuite shower-toilet. The only step within the station is to the shower unit. There are grab handles on either side of the step. The interior wood clad walls are decorated with a pale colour wash, while a combination of centre and wall lights provides a range of good lighting to suit the occasion. A mains fire alarm system is fitted, and there is a fire blanket and fire extinguisher in the kitchen area. Electric light switches are 1.4m from the floor, electric sockets either 0.4m or 1.0m above the floor. The TV, video and radio all have remote controls. Access to the patio is via a level flagged path.

Description

The Old Snowdon Ranger Station, built in the 1870s and now a listed building, is in a superb position in the heart of the Snowdonia National Park. Located at the foot of Snowdon, where the Snowdon Ranger footpath starts, and with a request stop for the scenic Welsh Highland Railway just behind the cottage, you are 8 miles from Caernarfon, with its stunning castle, and 5 miles from the popular village of Beddgelert.

'the Cwellyn Arms pub in Rhyd Ddu has a beer garden for sunny days and a roaring open fire to sit by in the cooler months. What better way to end a cycle ride on the Lon Gwyrfai or a walk across the Nantlle ridge! Just down the road is Snowdonia Park brew pub, with award winning beer brewed on the premises and bar meals!'  from Jacky, our local property manager

The Cottage: is a cosy little stone building, formerly a station on the narrow-gauge Welsh Highland Railway. Now, only the original size of the station, with its waiting room and ticket office, limits the cottage to its Visit Wales 3 Star status.  The cottage is wood lined and well insulated, providing a year-round holiday venue. Heating is by electric convector heaters.

The Living/dining room: is open plan, with two easy chairs for relaxing, a small dining table and chairs, a 26" flatscreen TV/DVD and a radio/CD/MP3 player and WiFi.

The Kitchen Area: has a fully equipped with a fridge, small freezer, electric oven, hob, extractor and washing machine.

Bedroom: a double bedroom with storage and an en suite shower room.

Shower Room: with shower, WC and basin.

Outside: is a private patio with views down the valley, seating, recliners and a barbecue, plus a cycle store. There is also access to a delightful shared mature garden with a small stream, with seating to enjoy the stunning views. Private Parking.

You couldn’t be in a better location for exploring Snowdonia! Right in the heart of the mountains and by the scenic Llyn Chwellyn (lake) with gorgeous views all around. The closest village at Rhyd Ddu, 1.5 miles away, has a good pub serving food, the Cwellyn Arms and a lovely little seasonal café serving homemade goodies, the Ty Mawr café. This is also the start of the Lon Gwyfai footpath/cycle route to Beddgelert, a lovely multi use path winding its way through the forest. Beddgelert is a pretty village with a National Trust shop and plenty of cafes, restaurants and pubs. Lovely walks can be taken along the river and to visit the famous Gelerts grave. The walled town of Carnarfon has the impressive castle, marina, and arts centre plus all the facilities you would expect from a small town.

Reviews

Another fantastic stay at the Snowdon Ranger Station. Cozy and quite. We also had amazing views of the summit of Snowdon all week. It was truly magical staying here in the winter and also having some snow as well as crystal clear skies during the day allowing us to still explore. Thanks again for an awesome visit

Previous Customer,

Highly recommended. Great location and views. The former station building (now just a request stop) has been sympathetically converted into a lovely cosy and comfortable cottage. A trip on the heritage train which runs from Porthmadog to Caernarfon is a must for the scenery, or just watch the trains go by. For walkers, the Snowdon Ranger Path starts here and the Rhyd Ddu Path and station is just a couple of miles away. An enjoyable Xmas break for me, despite some atrocious weather. I would be happy to return.

Previous Customer,

The location is magnificent, the property itself is snug with everything you need inside and out. Highly recommend even if you are not a walker as there is so much to do rain or shine. Thank you to the host for your welcome and making our stay so pleasant.

Previous Customer,

We loved the location of the cottage particularly because it was so near Snowdon. The cottage proved to be very well equipped and comfortable.. We found that it was very easy to get supplies of food from the nearby villages which were on hand. Being so close to the Mountains was very enjoyable and the beauty of Snowdonia was breath taking. We also felt that we got to know the owner of the cottage who lived nearby.

Previous Customer,

Lovely property in a lovely place, our only issue was the soft bed but that's a very personal preference

Previous Customer,

A beatifully located cottage surrounded by magnificent views of the local landscape. Snowdon Ranger is centrally placed for visits to many of the attractions hereabouts, whether it be town or countryside.within this popular part of north Wales. For the energetically inclined it is the perfect starting point for climbing Snowdon, although up hill starts virtually straight away. Some of the roads are quite narrow and care is needed when travelling.

Previous Customer,

Excellent location for walking and historical sites. Welcoming host a small cosy cottage with everything you need including seating in outside area

Mr Customer 2,

10th? visit to the Old Snowdon Ranger Station (Lost count!). Everything good. It is the perfect 'chill-out' cottage with sensational scenery and a lovely host next door. Trains, buses and the Snowdon Ranger footpath run almost from the door. A definite 11 out of 10!
