Visiting Dunwich  

Dunwich beach is a lovely pebble beach perfect for a stroll and a paddle, but it is what’s behind the beach that really steals the show. Dunwich Heath backs up the beach and is an AONB run by the National Trust. Home to many species of flora and fauna, including some very cute deer, and is a wonderful place to explore. The National Trust put on lots of family-friendly activities at Dunwich Heath throughout the year and have lots of kid’s trails that you can print out and take with you as you explore the area and uncover all its secrets.  

Dunwich is known as the ‘lost city of East Anglia’ and was once the capital of a Saxon kingdom with a population one-sixth the size of London during the eleventh century. Unfortunately, a flood took most of the city and its residents underwater and the once mighty city was reduced to the small village it is today. You can discover more about this interesting aspect of Dunwich’s past by visiting the local Dunwich Museum, or embarking on the village’s historic trail, a map of which can be picked up from the museum.  

Dunwich also has a fine selection of local eateries to choose from. Head to the local pub, The Ship Inn, for a tasty lunch and a chillout in the beer garden, or treat yourself to an afternoon tea at Flora Tea Rooms or Dingle Hill Tearooms.
