Things to do around Darley Dale  

This really is a lovely destination for a family holiday; children will love Gulliver’s World theme park at Matlock Bath, just an eight-minute drive from Darley Dale. The park was created by Ray Phillips as a model village for his children in 1978 and today's children can enjoy adrenaline-fueled adventures in the most stunning location. Imagine taking a ride on the log flume 300 feet above the Derwent Valley! Soar high above the woodland estate in a cable car at The Heights of Abraham and get a bird’s eye view of Matlock Bath. But all the action isn’t restricted to the sky… the estate is home to many caverns too, join one of the tours which run throughout the day, step back into the 17th century and learn about the mining history. It was in 1787 that the woodland estate first opened to the public when the "savage garden" was constructed around Masson Hill, the cable cars were added in 1984 to draw in the visitors.  

The area is a good choice for a dog friendly holiday with some lovely local walks on the doorstep so make sure you pack your boots. Check out the local circular route to the Nine Ladies Stone Circle, a stone circle which dates back to the Bronze Age. Another favourite route is along the railway to one of the waterfalls in Darley Dale.  

There’s so much to see in the local area and it’s worth checking out the nearby towns of Matlock, Ashbourne, Belper and Bakewell (don’t forget to try the famous Bakewell pudding at the old original Bakewell Pudding Shop). A visit to the Peak District wouldn’t be complete without spending a few hours at Chatsworth House. This splendid residence has been in the Cavendish family for sixteen generations and is home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. You may recognise it from the BBC’s adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.  

There are a number of churches in Darley Dale, the Grade II Listed  St Helen’s Church, is the most well-known which dates back to the 12th Century. Look out for the ancient Yew tree which is over 2,000 years old!  

And finally… The architecture of the village is the work of Sir Joseph Whitworth who, along with his wife, Louisa Whitworth, set up the hospital, institute and the park in the 19th Century. The Whitworths lived at Stancliffe Hall, a wonderful mansion that dates back to the 15th century, if you fancy living in the lap of luxury you can book this stunning property with its 20-metre heated swimming pool and gym!
