Vibrant Belper is a hive of activity with some great independent shops, galleries and quirky stores. It has held the prestigious accolade of High Street of the Year many times, most recently in 2020. 

Our holiday cottages are in or near Belper and are perfect for a get together with family and friends. They offer a great base for getting out and about and exploring this beautiful area of Derbyshire. 

Things to do in Belper 

It’s not all about shopping, this bustling town and the surrounding Derwent Valley is the birthplace of the factory system. A visit to the Derwent Valley Mills Heritage Centre and textile museum tells the story of the celebrated textile traditions in the area and provides an insight into the everyday lives of the mill workers too. This mill was once described as ‘the best in England’. There are a  number of mills across the Derwent Valley, their importance is so significant that they hold the status of a UNESCO world heritage site and well worth a visit. 

One of the mills was owned by the Strutt family and they gifted the Belper River Gardens to the town. These beautiful Edwardian gardens are perfect for a picnic and a stroll. Visit during the summer months and take to the River Derwent in a rowing boat, swan boat or pedalo, all available to hire.  

Belper is a foodie paradise with some great chefs creating delicious dishes using the best locally sourced ingredients. The town is also home to micro pubs, cocktails bars, cafes and delis. Vegans are well catered for too with a dedicated vegan restaurant.  

Belper has certainly moved with the times, during the late 1700’s it was one of the first mill towns and today the bustling well-trodden cobbled streets are buzzing with a lively community and visitors discovering the past and enjoying the present.
