Ulverston's History & Heritage
Ulverston is a town with a strong market & maritime heritage. Centuries ago when the canal was built in 1796, Ulverston exported copper, slate and linen, all produced in Cumbria, all over the globe. The canal also happens to be the world's shortest, widest and deepest canal, stretching a mile and a half to the sea at Morecambe Bay. The Hoad Hill Monument is a pillar of recognition towards Sir John Barrow, the founding member of the Royal Geographical Society and Intrepid Explorer. At the top of the tower, you will be greeted by simply sublime views of the Morecambe Bay, Lakeland Fells and beyond if the weather is in your favour.
