Wondering what to do in Hythe? Well, don’t worry because this town may be small, but there is plenty to discover. Hythe is part of Romney Marsh, once affectionately called ‘The Fifth Continent’, due to its diverse landscape, wildlife, and plantlife, and we recommended that you take a day to discover the marsh, either via walking or driving out to other areas of the marsh, such as Dungeness. Closer to home but just as lovely is the Brockhill Country Park in Saltwood, which has a variety of woodland, meadows, lakes and playgrounds. There are plenty of waymarked walks across the park and dogs are welcome.  

Like much of Kent, Hythe is shaped by its military history and one place you can really learn about its military significance is the Royal Military Canal. The 28-mile canal, which was constructed between 1804 and 1809 was originally built as a defence against a potential invasion by Napoleon. Nowadays, the canal is a favourite spot for walkers, cyclists and horse riders alike and is also wheelchair accessible. One of the most popular walking routes close to Hythe is the 7km stretch from Seabrook to West Hythe Dam.  

Whilst on your walk, you may spot the local steam train in the distance. The miniature heritage railway runs through Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch and was built in the 1920s by millionaire duo Captain J.E.P Howey and Count Louis Zborowski and is still open for leisure journeys today. Whilst you are walking the canal, you can visit Hythe station to watch the trains come in and stop off for a bite to eat at the nearby Vintage Style Tea Room. The tea room is just one of a selection of fabulous eateries in Hythe, but we recommend The Lazy Lobster, which is right on Hythe beach. Enjoy a spot of brunch or a fresh seafood lunch here whilst taking in the sea breeze. For fine dining, be sure to pay a visit to the Hide and Fox Restaurant in Saltwood, which offers exclusive tasting menus.
