Falmouth sits at the mouth of the River Fal on the Falmouth estuary, a vibrant holiday hotspot on the south coast of Cornwall. This lively town is known for its contemporary art galleries and creative buzz, a great base for a holiday with excellent shops, restaurants and cafes – which makes Falmouth an ideal destination for a self-catering cottage holiday.

Home to the world’s third largest deep-water harbour, some of the best beaches and first class watersports including gig rowing, diving and kayaking. The town also hosts prestigious sailing events with the Pendennis Cup and Falmouth Regatta maintaining its maritime legacy.

Falmouth’s beaches are great!

Whether you want to build sandcastles, paddleboard, kayak, dive or go rock pooling there’s a beach to do it and a coastal cottage to stay in. Gyllyngvase is a favourite spot for rock pooling at low tide. For surfing and watersports, head for Maenporth beach. Nearby Castle beach is in a lovely spot, mainly shingle but again great for rock pooling and Swanpool is a pretty sandy cove, perfect for families. Nature lovers should visit the Swanpool nature reserve which lies behind the beach with its rare wooded wetland, it’s home to Britain's only Trembling Sea Mat (which looks more like a plant than an animal). Look out for migrant chiffchaffs and willow warblers in the spring.

Where do we start? Falmouth is in a great location. Not only does it have four main beaches but there are beautiful gardens brimming with exotic plants. Falmouth’s mild maritime climate is perfect for sub-tropical plants and Kimberly Park Municipal Gardens showcases the very best. Stroll around these beautiful gardens, relax with a picnic and enjoy an oasis of calm. 

The National Maritime Museum Cornwall has won numerous awards and has an underwater observation window so you can get a glimpse of underwater life.

Built by Henry the VIII, the iconic Pendennis Castle lies on a headland sheltering Falmouth from the sea. This fortress is complete with restored Victorian and WWII defences. The Discovery Centre is a must, bringing the past to life through hands-on activities.

Art lovers should take a break from the beach and visit the award winning Falmouth Art Gallery featuring some of the best of British art including Sir Alfred Munnings and Henry Scott-Tuke. Plus an impressive collection in excess of 2,000 artworks. Entry is free so you can just dip in and out whenever the mood takes you.

Explore the Fal estuary… ferries regularly run connecting Falmouth with the charming harbour town of St Mawes and the city of Truro.
