Food is a big part of the Padstow experience, so if you do holiday here, you should expect to be well fed and watered. Sometimes referred to as ‘Padstein’, Padstow is renowned as the home to many of celebrity chef Rick Stein’s restaurants and food-based endeavors. His first restaurant, the Seafood Restaurant, opened in Padstow in 1975, but since then, Stein has opened a cafe, patisserie, fish and chip restaurant and more in the town, making it somewhat of a foodie’s paradise.
Of course it’s not just Rick Stein’s creations that make Padstow one of the most delectable destinations in Cornwall. Dotted across the town are dozens of locally-run and independent pubs, restaurants, cafes and bars to choose from. It would be hard to list all of our favourites, but a definite highlight is Greens, which has amazing views across the Camel Estuary and even has a dog-friendly mini golf course attached – a great option for kids! Puccellis is also an amazing spot for Italian food, should you be craving a break from seafood and the Chough Bakery on the harbour makes an excellent Cornish pasty.
Aside from being fit to burst with tasty treats, Padstow is a coastal town, making days out on the beach a vital part of any Padstow holiday. Padstow is situated on the Camel Estuary, the mouth of a dazzling blue river and the sandy shores and fine weather of the area can feel positively Mediterranean in the summer months. St George’s Cove is Padstow’s closest beach, at just 0.5 miles away from the town’s harbour. The beach is beautiful and sandy, although swimming is not advised. There is a regular ferry service that takes you across to Rock Beach, which is just across the water from Padstow. It has a gorgeous golden sandy beach and is also backed up by the famous St Enodoc Golf Club, which often has available spots for a few rounds if a day on the course sounds like fun.
The Camel Valley Trail ends in Padstow and cycling the stretch of the route between here and Wadebridge is a very popular activity for locals and tourists alike. You can hire bikes for all ages and abilities from various companies in the area, including Camel Valley Cycle Hire located in Wadebridge. The route from Wadebridge to Padstow is five miles of flat surface, making it a nice gentle cycle route with stunning views along the way. For those who are really into their cycling, the whole route is 18 miles long and passes through Bodmin, making it an amazing way to see the very best of the Cornish coast and countryside.
There are also a number of Cornwall’s most cherished attractions near Padstow, including the ever-popular Eden Project, which is just 20 minutes away.
