Top activities to do with the kids in Windermere this Summer

As the mum of a toddler I often struggle entertaining my son throughout the summer holidays but know he will enjoy a good dose of Lake District fresh air when the sun is out. I’ve compiled a list of some great days out for children of all ages in and around Windermere this summer. Here are my top 5 things to do with children in Windermere.

World of Beatrix Potter- Bowness-on-Windermere

The exhibition features an introductory film before stepping in to the magical world of Beatrix’s most famous characters including Peter Rabbit, Mrs Tiggy-Winkle and Jemima Puddle Duck. The exhibit takes roughly 45 minutes. There is a shop and tearoom for you to enjoy, and through the summer months there are performances of ‘Where is Peter Rabbit’ in The Old Laundry theatre, which is located in the attraction. The World of Beatrix Potter is mostly indoors so probably best for a rainy day, because we sometimes have these in the Lake District!

Wray Castle- Low Wray

Wray Castle is a Gothic castle situated on the north-west shores of Lake Windermere and is run by the National Trust. Your whole family can try sailing with taster sessions taking place on selected days through the summer holidays. They also offer self-led activities which include den building, skimming stones or making a daisy chain, which you can tick off the National Trust’s ‘50 things to do before you’re 11 ¾’ list. You can also indulge in fancy dress with the family and become a king, queen, knight or princess for the day while building your own castle with giant foam bricks. Little ones can enjoy a Peter Rabbit adventure too. The castle’s grounds include lakeside paths and provide the perfect setting for a picturesque picnic. 

Grizedale Forest- Hawkshead

Grizedale Forrest is in the heart of the Lake District National Park and offers an unrivalled day out for everyone. There are well marked walking and cycling trails featuring sculptures and natural wildlife. Summer holiday activities include the Highway Rat activity trail, based on the books by Julia Donaldson and Axel Sheffler and activity packs for the trail are available too. The onsite café and adventure play area are ideal for refreshments and entertaining the little ones. For older children there are more adventurous activities including a Go Ape adventure and bike hire.

Fell Foot- Windermere

Fell Foot Park is situated at the southern tip of Lake Windermere and is managed by the National Trust. It’s a great spot for families to play, explore and relax. The sweeping lawns offer plenty of space for games, picnics and gentle walks. Easy lakeside access is ideal for paddling, swimming and boating on England’s longest lake, Lake Windermere. Rowing boats are available to hire from April to October and the adventure play area is a fun spot for children of all ages. Events are taking place throughout the summer including the All England stone skimming championships, Summer Willow Trail and Meadow Month. Brockhole- Windermere

The Brockhole visitors centre is located between Windermere and Ambleside on the eastern shore of Lake Windermere. Set in exquisite grounds and gardens, Brockhole has plenty of activities this summer for young and old alike. Enjoy boat hire, rafting, pony rides, archery, orienteering or brave the cave (for kids over 5). Brockhole has one of the best adventure play-grounds in the area, as well as indoor soft play if the weather turns. This is definitely my little boy’s favourite destination to let off steam. There is a café onsite and also the ‘Gaddum’ restaurant if you fancy more grown up sophistication.
