Please introduce yourself....

We are the Wallings family of Wallings Farm.  

What is it you do? What’s the story behind your business?

Three generations of our family operate our working farm alongside a number of other enterprises. Peter (dad) started making the famous Wallings Ice Cream on our farm in 1989 and is still in charge of making ice cream today.  Milk from our dairy is brought across the road to our ice cream making factory, and after a lot of love and care we produce a wide choice of flavours that you can enjoy in our parlour at the farm. We also produce delicious handmade chocolates right here at Wallings Farm too, often using the same flavours as we use in the ice cream. Our chocolate ranges change depending on the season but there's always a wide selection on our counter to choose from. If you come to visit us Wallings Farm you can enjoy other delicious sweet treats like waffles and pancakes in our eatery too.

What makes your business great, why should guests staying at Original Cottages Lake District visit?

The farm was purchased by our great grandfather, Tom Walling, back in 1948. The working farm remains a valuable part of our family business however there was a need to diversify in order to survive. Now three generations of our family work in different roles to run the 'Wallings enterprises'. To enjoy the true cow to cone experience come and visit us, our family welcomes your family at Wallings Farm! 

What do you love about the Lake District?

We all work long hours so don't get out as much as we'd like but we're very lucky to have the Lake District on our doorstep so go out when we can. 

Tell us about your favourite spot in the Lake District, and why you love it so much?

We enjoy going out anywhere that's family friendly, somewhere the children would enjoy and run around at is important. 

What are the top 3 places guests of Original Cottages should visit or activities you would recommend they do?

The top 3 places that we'd recommend are: 

1. Brockhole on Lake Windermere is great place for all the family. They run lots of activities and organise seasonal events too, so there's something to keep everyone busy when you visit Brockhole.
2. Grizedale Forest near Hawkshead is great for mountain biking with all the family and there's also some well marked pram/wheelchair friendly walks from the visitor centre too.
3. Tarn Hows near Coniston and Hawkshead is a beautiful and scenic walk that goes around the lake. Again you can walk this with pram/wheelchair.
