Boating in the Broads

Wind your way through a crystal labyrinth on board your very own day-hire boat on the Suffolk Broads. Discover unique wildlife as you gently chug along the winding riverways, moor along the embankments and enjoy a hearty lunch of regional, seasonal food from one of the Broads’ many waterside pubs, and explore some of the quaint market towns nestled along its shores. If you’re feeling energetic, ditch the motor and paddle your way through the reeds and marshes, to spots so rarely seen by passers-by.

The Lost City of England

A quaint village along the Suffolk Coast National Nature Reserve, the little village of Dunwich is brimming with stories. Once the same size as London, this Anglo-Saxon capital has since halved, losing ground to the ever-approaching tide. Pull on your boots, zip up your coat and get outside in the heather hilltops where hundreds of Red Deer roam. Set sail for The Ship pub, where you can indulge into some of the best fish and chips on the Suffolk shores. Or, head to the beach and let your worries ebb away as you delve into your favourite novel.

The ‘Castle on the Hill’

Perched upon the slopes overlooking the historic market town of Framlingham,  ‘The castle on the hill’ is a once fearsome fortress from the late 12th Century. Within its towering stone walls, taste Tudor-inspired treats at the cafe and discover the landmark at which Bloody Mary Queen of Scots was proclaimed Queen of England. Walk the ramparts and immerse yourself in an age-old time with one of the many events held here. From the 23 until 27 July,  your little knights and princesses can master the arts of heroic chivalry and eloquent etiquette. And, if you go to the nearby village, you might get lucky and spot Ed Sheeran dipping back into his old hometown for a quick visit.

A beautiful and vibrant market town nestled along the banks of the River Deben, Woodbridge has some of the best restaurants, shopping and pubs in Suffolk. Independent boutiques line is cosy streets while the bustling Market Hill echoes the sounds of local merchants. Stroll along the quayside, where only the sounds of boats drifting past and chirping birds can be heard from its tranquil shores. Visit the iconic Tide Mill, one of only two tide mills in the country still producing stoneground wholemeal flour. Or, rest your legs at one of the riverside restaurants and take in the breathtaking vistas as you treat yourself to some Suffolk specialities.

“This is my twelfth year working with the local team in Suffolk, and I’m still discovering lots of lovely new places to recommend to our guests. Only a few miles from the lovely and famous town of Southwold, we have our very own special beach at Covehithe which is one of Suffolk’s best-kept secrets. The golden sands of this stunning shoreside haven can only be accessed by foot or by cycle, although you’ll find some parking at the nearby Church. During the summer, locals use this beach to escape the crowds. There are lots of picturesque villages to explore, including Dunwich, Walberswick and Westleton which sits by the beautiful Minsmere Nature Reserve. Wherever you dine, you’ll find fantastic food and smiling faces, along with the wonderful wines and beers from Suffolk’s very own Adnams Brewery.”
