Family Holidays in Sussex

Holidays in Sussex are perfect for all the family. There are so many things to do, and attractions to see - it is difficult to know where to start. Here’s a few ideas for places and activities that everyone can enjoy regardless of their age:

Outdoor and active

Getting the children out to burn off some of that excess energy couldn’t be easier during holidays in Sussex. Why not spend a day out on the South Downs Way – a fantastic chalk path running through the national park made for cyclists, walkers and kite flyers? If swimming is more your choice of recreational pursuit then head for Pells Pool in Lewes - Britain’s oldest outdoor swimming pool. For indoor pools try the Triangle in Burgess Hill for flumes and rapids and Splashpoint in Worthing, which boasts three indoor pools as well as an outdoor paddling pool and sun deck.

Those with a head for heights might want to consider Tilgate Park near Crawley where there is a Go Ape activity zone made up of zip wires and Tarzan swings. The park also features a nature park, play area and lake for good measure. Alternatively, there is a great indoor climbing centre just west of Hove called Boulder Brighton with all sorts of tricky wall climbs – they offer family bouldering sessions as an introduction to this energetic sport.

Beaches

Everyone loves a beach, and there are so many to choose from in Sussex whatever the weather. Go to Camber Sands for wild sand dunes and kitesurfing; Cuckmere Haven for windswept rock pools and dramatic chalk cliffs; West Wittering for white sand and good swimming and Hove for beachside cafes, roller-skating and people-watching.

Wildlife

If wildlife and nature is what you want from your holidays in Sussex, then head for the Wetland Centre near Arundel. Bird watching and pond dipping are the order of the day here where a boat safari – a 30 minute boat trip through the wetlands – is included in the entrance fee. If you are lucky you might see a water vole.

Drusilla’s Park near Alfriston is one of the best small zoos in the region and includes a range of play areas and mini-theme park rides based on characters from Thomas the Tank Engine and Hello Kitty. Brighton’s Sea Life Centre on the seafront offers an enjoyable and informative day out and visitors can see over 150 species from anacondas and poison frogs to piranhas and terrapins.

More fun

For something a bit different try the award-winning Cass Sculpture Park near Goodwood, which features 80 ever-changing contemporary sculptures set in 26 acres of west Sussex countryside. It’s an amazing place to spend the day and all ages will get something from encountering giant pieces of art in the woods.

If a ride on a steam railway is a must for your family holiday there are some good ones in Sussex, such as the Lavender Line near Uckfield and the Bluebell Railway which runs from Sheffield Park to East Grinstead. There is a National Trust property at Sheffield Park which has extensive gardens and lakes as well as an outdoor play trail kids will love.

More fun can be found at Washbrooks Family Farm in Hurstpierpoint where you’ll encounter lots of farm animals close up, coupled with both indoor and outdoor children’s play areas. If you are on a break during the spring then bear in mind Coombes Farm near Lancing, which opens its doors so children can witness the wonder of the lambing season.
