With the Autumnal weather upon us it can be much more of a challenge to find something to do with the kids at the weekend or, if you are planning a winter break, thinking of what to do should the weather be wet.  Here are just a few ideas of where to take cover or how to keep warm when visiting North Devon.

01 - If you have an interest in history then why not visit one of the National Trust estates such as Arlington Court; an intriguing Regency house and Carriage Museum near Barnstaple. Take a tour or meander at your own pace, peering around the house and carriage museum with its interesting collection of treasures. Set in 30 acres there are plenty of lovely walks and things to discover such as the walled garden, ornamental pond, sheep, ponies, deer and an abundance of birds.  You can also watch bats on their live cellar bat cam. A great day out for all.

02 - Westward Ho! to Clovelly (for the fitter amongst you!) 11 miles of breathtaking walking, the perfect challenge on a drier day.  Admire the wonderful clifftop  views out across the wild Atlantic to wooded paths and fern banked trails.  Your reward will be reaching your destination of the charming village of Clovelly, well known for its steep cobbled streets where you explore further or take a well earned rest and sample the local cuisine at the Red Lion Hotel Harbour Restaurant, The Cottage Tea Rooms or The New Inn.

03 - If it's food that keeps you happy (and warm) then be sure to include a Sunday roast. A popular choice is the Exmoor restaurant at The Hunters Inn in Heddon Valley. They not only offer a Sunday roast but cater for all tastes.  Serving local ales too, making it most appealing after or before that afternoon walk!

04 - For the really brave amongst you, who won’t let a drop in temperature or a bit of rain ruin your holiday stormy days are great at leaving a trail of great waves in their wake. So get out there on the waves and brave the Atlantic swell. The surf schools are closed but if you’re a seasoned surfer, it’s a fantastic time to catch some memorable waves.  So put on your winter wetsuit and head to the North Devon beaches of Croyde, Putsborough, Woolacombe or Saunton Sands and find the best breaks.

05 - If you need to keep the kids entertained head down to the Big Sheep ‘a sheep theme park’ & it’s all weather attraction.  You will find something for all the family here come rain or shine, the indoor play area is always a huge hit with the little ones, and if you enjoy getting your fingers nipped by our donkey friends, then the indoor animal barn is a must.

The park is only open at weekends and during the school holidays over the winter months so be sure to check the website before setting off.

Whatever the weather be sure to have fun!
